Field research in Himachal Pradesh - October 2024

Project: World Wood Day Foundation | 2024

Project Investigators: Jay Thakkar, Mansi Shah

Researchers: Vedanshi Sarda, Saurabh Madan

A recent field visit to Naggar, Himachal Pradesh turned out to be an incredibly insightful and enriching experience. Nestled in the breathtaking landscapes of the Himalayas, the journey offered a unique blend of cultural, architectural, and culinary exploration. This field study was conducted as part of the ‘World Wood Day Foundation’ project, led by Jay Thakkar and Mansi Shah whose guidance and vision made this journey possible. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to be part of this initiative.

Our exploration began with a detailed study of vernacular architecture, specifically the traditional Kath-Khuni style in the picturesque village of Chachogi. Kath-Khuni, with its unique interlocking wood and stone construction, is a testament to the ingenuity of local craftsmanship and their adaptation to the mountainous terrain and seismic conditions.

The visit coincided with the world-famous Kullu Dussehra festival, a vibrant celebration that showcases the cultural richness of the region. Witnessing the processions of deities, the colorful traditional attire, and the joyous atmosphere of the festival was an unforgettable experience. The interaction with the locals further deepened our understanding of their traditions, way of life, and connection to the natural environment.

Every moment of this journey, from architectural studies to cultural immersion, enriched our understanding of the region's heritage, leaving us inspired by the harmony between the people, their traditions, and the environment.
