Field Visit to Shimla, Himachal Pradesh - September 2024

Role: Researcher

Project Investigators: Jay Thakkar

In September 2024, I, along with Kamna Vyas and Taral Patel, conducted a field study under the guidance of Jay Thakkar with the students of the studio Celebrating Crafts at CEPT University. Our journey through Himachal Pradesh was a deep dive into its cultural heritage, traditional crafts, and architectural marvels.

We began in Kufri, visiting a heritage museum that introduced us to the region’s flora, fauna, and cultural traditions. Interacting with locals gave us valuable insights into their lives and beliefs. In Shimla, we explored the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies and the Himachal State Museum, uncovering historical narratives, architectural styles, and regional artefacts.

In Rampur, we studied the architectural blend of Padam Palace, engaged with local metal artisans, and documented traditional festivals and rituals. At the Bhimakali Temple in Sarahan, we observed its unique architectural features and rituals, deepening our understanding of the region’s spiritual practices.

Our visit to Theog was particularly enlightening as we explored Kath Khuni architecture, met artisans working on temple construction, and ventured into local villages. These experiences allowed us to document traditional building techniques, community lifestyles, and agricultural practices. In Sainj Palace, we delved into its royal legacy and untouched architectural elements, gaining further insights into the cultural significance of the region.

Interactive sessions with historians and curators enriched our understanding of Pahadi culture, temple typologies, and the influence of regional deities. We explored traditional crafts, jewelry symbolism, and the role of art forms in preserving Himachal’s cultural identity.

This field study was an immersive experience that offered invaluable lessons in appreciating, documenting, and celebrating the crafts, traditions, and heritage of Himachal Pradesh, emphasizing the importance of preserving these cultural practices for future generations.
