Contextualising Interior Space-Making
The project “Nirvana” is a hospitality space designed on the contours of Gangtok, facing the ranges of Mt. Kangchendzonga. The concept is inspired by the regional context of the Bhutia community and their culture. The main theme revolves around the regional dance of Sikkim which is the Cham.
This semester was divided into two modules: architectural design & concept interiors.
The layers used for translation into form, interiors and furnishings are Monasteries, Warrior dance and their attires respectively. The design explores a range of vibrant colors used to enhance chaos, drama and celebration. The spaces use textile (silk brocade, linen and lepcha weave) as their main interior elements, and wooden craft and bamboo; the locally found craft forms of Sikkim.
