Adobe House - Traveler's Home

Nestled in the picturesque city of Udaipur, Rajasthan, fondly known as the City of Lakes. The Adobe House is a tranquil retreat for travelers, situated at a prime lakeside location.

The concept of the project draws inspiration from one of Udaipur’s quintessential architectural elements: the courtyard. A study of courtyards in the city’s temples, houses, and palaces provided valuable insights into their spatial qualities, including the interplay of light and shadow, contrasts in massing, volumetric diversity, and the poetic movement of light through openings.

At the heart of the design is the courtyard, envisioned as a space of breath and openness. The elements facing inward provide a sense of visual connectivity, akin to standing in a traditional chowk: a central space connecting various streets, with facades forming a harmonious dialogue.

The transition from dark, thick walls to the light-filled openness of the chowk serves as a metaphor for the journey from tightness to liberation. This interplay of dark and light, mass and void, enriches the spatial experience, anchoring the traveler in a sense of place and tradition. These qualities informed the design, shaping an organic form that balances functionality with aesthetics. The layout prioritizes thoughtful space planning, while the structure’s monochrome palette accentuates the drama of light and shadow.
